چکیده

The origin of the luminosity dependence of the equivalent width (EW) of broad emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN) – the Baldwin effect – is not firmly established yet. We explore this question for the broad C IV λ1549 line using the Boroson & Green sample of the 87 z 0.5 Bright Quasar Survey (BQS) quasars. Useful UV spectra of the C IV region are available for 81 of the objects, which are used to explore the dependence of the C IV EW on various emission properties. We confirm earlier results on the strong correlations of the C IV EW with some of the emission parameters which define the Boroson & Green Eigenvector 1, and with the optical to X-ray slope αox. In addition, we find a strong correlation of the C IV EW with the relative accretion rate, L/LEdd. Since L/LEdd drives some of the Eigenvector 1 correlations, it may be the primary physical parameter which drives the Baldwin effect for C IV.

Baldwin effect for the narrow Fe K α lines observed in Active Galactic Nuclei

The majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by XMM-Newton reveal narrow Fe Kα lines at ∼ 6.4 keV, due to emission from cold (neutral) material. There is an X-ray Baldwin effect in Type I AGN, in that the equivalent width of the line decreases with increasing luminosity, with weighted linear regression giving EW ∝ L −0.17 ± 0.08 (Spearman Rank probability of > 99.9 per cent). With curr...

Narrow Iron Kα Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei: Evolving Populations?

We assemble a sample consisting of 66 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from literature and the XMM-Newton archive in order to investigate the origin of the 6.4 keV narrow iron Kα line (NIKAL). The X-ray Baldwin effect of the NIKAL is confirmed in this sample. We find the equivalent width (EW ) of the NIKAL is more strongly inversely correlated with Eddington ratio (E) than the 2-10 keV X-ray lumin...

What is the Origin of the Baldwin Effect in the BLR and the NLR ?

The origin of the luminosity dependence of the strength of broad and narrow emission lines in AGN (i.e. the Baldwin effect) is not firmly established yet. We explore this question using the Boroson & Green sample of the 87 z ≤ 0.5 PG quasars. UV spectra of the C IV region with a sufficient S/N are available for 81 of the objects. We use these spectra to explore the dependence of the C IV EW on ...

Emission-Line versus Continuum Correlations in Active Galactic Nuclei

The Baldwin Effect, a negative correlation between emission-line equivalent width and luminosity in active galactic nuclei, is still of interest as a diagnostic of accretion physics nearly thirty years after its discovery. This review examines recent developments in the study of correlations between line and continuum emission in AGNs, as measured both in ensembles and in individual sources.
